"Friend of the Devil", The Grateful Dead, and GIVING SONGS

When I was a young man—I figure I was probably around 15 years old, I had these two friends: Josh and Jeff. This was in Visalia, CA, where I grew up. I was learning how to play guitar at the time—and I liked singing a lot too. I was very much interested in a lot of the music that was permeating the airwaves in the 1960’s, as well as, music that was part of the counter-culture in that era. This came fast on the heals of a lot of the grunge music that was big at the time of my teenage years, for my generation. It’s been humorous watching all the teenagers around now, 2023, wearing the clothing of “grunge” era musicians—much as we did at their age, wearing the tie die clothing, bell bottoms, and making the same aesthetic choices as those of our parents when they were are age. It’s a 30 year cycle of sorts that perpetually rears its head once more, as a way of making us laugh thirty years later, and perhaps to remember where we came from.

The Grateful Dead seemed to me to be the pinnacle of that counter culture. At the moment, at the age of 15, I had never listened to their music aside from an MTV music video for a song of theirs called “Touch of Grey.” Yet, I constantly saw Josh and Jeff wearing these beautiful tie-die t-shirt designs that screamed for a person’s attention: namely mine. So, eventually I asked: “Who are The Grateful Dead?” We were swimming in a pool at Jeff’s house at the time of my query.

He was happy hop out of the pool, and to show me their music, and I was so surprised by what it sounded like. It was country and rock and bluegrass and jam… all mixed into a lovely little package of beautiful.

The lyric writing on many of these songs were sublime. They told stories.

I’m 44 years old now. I love the Grateful Dead. I remember when Jerry Garcia passed away and how many people felt his loss. I remember attending a tribute show to Jerry in the Angeles National Forest with my brother Clark.

I remember a lot of things. Music often is the border collie that herds our memories out of the darker pastures of our subconscious, bringing memories and experiences, once again to the forefront.

At any rate: I was in Michigan on tour again this Summer, and every time I come to Michigan, I perform a cover song for a charity called GIVING SONGS.

You can learn more about what they do HERE, however, in short, the music they release every month helps fundraise and provide wheelchair accessible vehicle grants for families in need.

This year, I decided to get stoned and perform “Friend of the Devil” with another local talent from Michigan named Rob Nelson, who sang background vocals and also played lead guitar on this track, while I played rhythm and sang. Rob sounds sublime and inspired.

Written by Jerry Garcia, John Dawson, and Robert Hunter, FRIEND OF THE DEVIL was released by the Grateful Dead in 1970 on an album called AMERICAN BEAUTY. To this day, it make me smile playing it. It was one of the first songs I ever learned to play. It has been covered by countless others—and I hope that we did a great job in its rendition.

Grand Island, NE House Concert Review

The Spencer Family were my Hosts in Grand Island, NE

Steven Spencer and the family were so kind as to host me in Grand Island, Nebraska for this tour I just arrived home from a few days ago.

Steven wrote me an email with a review of the show. I was so stoked to finally have the opportunity to read it today.

While I may not make this painfully honest: my world and my dreams of playing music and telling my stories definitely hinges on the kindness of those who are willing to listen to them. My hope is that those who do listen, find humanity in my stories. The humanity is the story. It is the story of all of us.

I have no doubt where my place is in the world. It is doing what I am currently doing. Thank you Steven, for painting my endeavors in such a colorful and favorable light, as you have done here. I am immensely grateful to you and your family.

Mark Twain | A New Single August 18th 2023

Samuel Langhorne Clemens

My next single is being released on August 18th on this year of our Lord, 2023. It is probably the most convoluted story I have ever told—perhaps beside The Incredible Shrinking Brain—but we will save the later for a different day.

Mark Twain. It’s a brilliant pen name for Samuel Langhorne Clemens. It’s riverboat slang. It was also the pen name of another riverboat pilot who wrote for a Riverboat Almanac. Samuel Clemens stole the idea from him. He admits to this notion in his book entitled “Life on the Mississippi.”

Regardless, it is a brilliant pen name if you examine it for what it is and what it represents. Mark Twain is a measurement of depth. Sounding boats and sounding poles were used by those navigating the murky waters of a muddy river that we are all familiar with as American Citizens: the Mississippi River. It has no rocky foundation to its deepest depths. It is a muddy river. It constantly changes in depths and sizes naturally due to this proclivity endowed to rivers of such quality. However, because of this—it is dangerous. A riverboat can easily run ashore, or find the unwelcome sand of a shoal, if not constantly checking the depth of the river using sounding boats and sounding poles. This is where the notion of marks and numbers come from. These depths would be shouted by those using the sounding poles, to measure depth, to those listening for their instruction as they piloted the vessel.

Mark Twain means two fathoms deep. It is the cut-off between dangerous and safe passage. Mark Twain is the shallowest depth in which a riverboat may pass without peril or hazard. Mark Twain is the convergence of safe and dangerous; it is the point in which these two opposing outcomes meet.

Moving forward with this as a title—I found a curious story regarding Samuel Langhorne Clemens and Halley’s Comet:

Halley's Comet appeared in the sky when Mark Twain was born in 1835. The comet moves in a seventy-five or seventy-six-year orbit, and, as it neared Earth once again in the year 1909, Twain said,

I came in with Halley's Comet... It is coming again ... and I expect to go out with it... The Almighty has said, no doubt: 'Now here are these two unaccountable freaks; they came in together, they must go out together.'

Sure enough, he died on April 21, 1910, just as the comet made its next pass within sight of Earth.

I was born on April 21st 1979. That has no relevance to this story, and I’m sure it is quite coincidental.

This song, that I am releasing August 18th, tells the story of Halley’s Comet and our Sun. It also, can stand for something completely different. It can be representative. Metaphor. Hyperbolic. Whatever the case may be: I am proud of its words and music and to be releasing it as I hear it in my head. It is a tip of my hat to someone I admire and a love letter of sorts to a romantic idea. I can’t help but be carried away by the trade winds of whimsy. I prefer it, as I can’t imagine life without my creativity to put wind in my sails in the first place.

For you.

May we all be friends and find the beauty in one another, no matter how difficult or easy that proves to be, ultimately. Perhaps—perhaps there are intrinsic links that bind us all to one another, if not just within the matter which makes everything, the gravitational forces caused by mass and its manipulation of spacetime, and the loosely understood physics of such.

"Coyote" | New Single on Streaming Services May 26th 2023

Hey everyone,

I will be releasing my first single for the new year on Friday May 26th 2023. It is by far, one of my favorite cuts from the new album. It's a song called "Coyote."

While I do come from a generation more accustomed to the idea of releasing an album all at once—perhaps this is no longer a wise decision as an artist in 2023. Doing my due diligence, I am confident that the model of releasing one single at a time may be—better.

So, that is what I will be doing. 

I am uploading this single to be digitally distributed, today, for an official release date on Friday May 26th 2023. You may pre-save my single on your favorite streaming service; I was told that it helps to secure a place on popular Spotify playlists. I would be honored to have you do that if you feel inclined. I am very proud of all the hard work that I put into this album and this song. I would like to do it justice by releasing it with as much authenticity and sincerity as possible. I create my music in this way—I plan to release it with an equal amount and measure of heart and sincerity.

My compass is the chills I get up and down my spine when I work on art. Losing track of time. Accidentally being late to things because I was having so much fun making something with all my being and soul. It's my inside poking out like the tag on the back collar of a T-shirt.

This song's inspiration came from touring the United States in 2021 after a long pandemic filled with isolation, self-reflection, and rumination. It was one of the most beautiful experiences of my life, having the opportunity to see the Rocky Mountains. To drive through the beautiful national park between Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Who knew that was there? Not me—that is, until I was balling my eyes out because of its beauty and depth. The endless stretches of desert between Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, Texas...

We live in such a gorgeous and diverse country filled with beautiful people. I am grateful and on my hands and knees every day for the privilege of getting to do what I do. It's also incredibly difficult, exhausting, contentious, dynamic, emotional, introspective, risky—and the most rewarding thing I can think of doing with my life—yet still, a privilege. Without a doubt. May I strive to continuously stay within the good graces of Fortuna, Hotei, Ganesha, Jesus, Muhammad, The Way, Yahweh, My Inner Voice, and every other personification and archetype of human experience, story, and history that pertains to the spreading of positive creation in this world. I am a student. I have much to learn until the day I breathe my last breath.

I am a 44 year old man who is trying his best to leave this place a little better than how he found it. Even if all my efforts are akin to just vacuuming the floor, dusting and tidying the place up a bit before the next tenant stays the night in this AirBnB we call Mother Earth, I am confident I will never regret how hard I work. Ever. I will not be an old man sitting on the porch thinking, "what would my life had been like, had I actually applied myself where my heart and soul pointed?"

Instead, I am endlessly strolling. An old desert dog. Amongst sage brush, and bunch grass, and cactus and fog. Slender and gangling my bush tail sags, as I trot through the desert: the cliff face and crags.

You might here my faint howl, when the wind carries my song just right.

The album that I am releasing right now has been a labor of love for me. It is called φ, or Phi. I have worked on it since 2017.

Phi is an irrational number (like my ambitions)—and like Pi, except Phi deals with spirals and is derived from the Fibonacci sequence—the sort of spirals you see in a pine cone, a pineapple, or the spreading of leaves on select plants to garner maximum sunlight—or the spiral of a milky way galaxy that we all live in.

Some of us derive significance from such things. Others? Not so much. It isn’t a necessity after all. Perhaps it’s just a way to pass the time—and I do that either way.

Curiosity and living life itself, is a fine enough sentiment to cue the music to: so I do—and then give it a queue to rest in: 12 songs to be precise, if precision were ever something a human being truly achieves.

I find us all to be an amazing and beautiful curiosity. A wonder. A joy. A miracle. As I age, I only become more enamored with us all, and what our purpose is here on Earth. Each of us.

For me, it feels like it is to write music about my life, both the good, and the bad—and to share it with as much honesty as possible, so that people may know that they are not alone in the way they feel. To play these songs for as many people as possible. To share my life, openly for those who care to listen.

… and although happiness may hardly need such expression or sentiment—heartbreak certainly does. There are so many of us out there that are hurting. I try to help in my own way.

Much like any song, or curiosity, or memory, or thought, or expression—or human being for that matter: we all matter. We are made of it, and we pass in conjunction with it, with each moment we are lucky enough to perceive.

May we all find our purpose and keep on doing and being the best version of ourselves. I try really hard every day to be that.

These 12 songs, available on all streaming services right now, are my life, written in music and melody and words: they are as much for you as they were cathartic for me over the past several years. I am thankful for you dear reader. Know that.

"Which Way Are You Goin'" | Jim Croce (Mike Vitale Cover)

One of my friends and Patrons, Susn, asked me to learn a Jim Croce cover called “Which Way Are You Goin’”. At the time, I was completely unfamiliar with this song. It is from his posthumous album released shortly after his death.

To me, it seemed relevant to many of the things happening around the world right now, as well as, within the United States. The year is 2020, and we are still finding ourselves confronted with a reality in which people refuse to hear each other when we speak. Yes, it would be easy for you the reader to laugh at me boiling things down to something so simple, but I ask that you entertain this idea for just a moment.

So many of us do not listen to one another. We wait for the other person to stop speaking so that we may in turn, talk. It is my speculation that this is because we value our own insight, thoughts, and ideals over those of the others around us.

When we truly respect others, we listen to what they have to say. We don’t just wait to talk. We observe and weigh what was said. We compare it against our own thoughts and ideals. In the year 2020, I hope that people may achieve this feat. In 2021, and the many years to come, I hope that we can become a species more open to ideas that are not our own—that we make an effort to expand our horizons in order to better fill the frame of our perceptions of one another—that we are capable of respecting each other as living creatures with our own unique thoughts and feelings, trying to share such in an open forum of communication.

Given our current circumstance world wide amongst a pandemic, may we all recognize each other as the same fragile creatures simply trying to express what we are feeling and observing, so that others around us may understand, and listen.

Pandemics aside, our issue with not understanding each other, starts at not listening. Once we successfully listen, it is then our duty to open our mind to as many possibilities as we are capable of. Hypocrisy is the mortar of our own bricks of belief, a burden we carry around for ages, before deciding they are far too heavy to carry any longer as a burden, so, we build a wall with them instead.

Like any piece of art, this song can be interpreted in a number of ways, however, by my own approximation—it seems to lean into the wind of hypocrisy as a subject matter—something that I feel is the mortar to many of our walls: as humans, as cultures, and creeds, and so forth. There is worth and intention to walls. However, there is equal virtue to an open field—the later however leaves itself open to so much, both positive and negative in nature and intent.

May we listen more and remain open, like a field. May we make no effort to incite the building of a wall. May we remain hopeful and positive. May we reach out to one another with olive branches, and not spears.

Superstition | Stevie Wonder (Mike Vitale Cover)

Here is my arrangement of the Stevie Wonder classic, “Superstition.” I’ve been trying to apply myself to learning some new things—in the case of this video, I taught myself how to play and use a Native Instruments Maschine mk3, a Roli Seaboard Block, shoot video on a Canon Eon Rebel t5 with a lens and camera that my friend is letting me borrow, edit on Premiere Pro, and put to use knowledge from audio mixing tutorials by Andrew Scheps (who is a really wonderful teacher—not to mention mixing engineer).

NPR Tiny Desk Contest 2020: Dandelion Seeds is now live on the NPR website!

As many of you probably remember from last year, I submitted a live recording of "Latchkey Kid (Live at Studio 333)" for the NPR Tiny Desk Concert Series. Everyone on Patreon helped to pay for the mixing of that song, which I am very thankful for. It is now available on Spotify and Apple Music.

Due to our current predicament, I am unable to record a song with the band, or to make a bigger production of it, so I opted instead to simply record the song at home and submit it on a zero budget.

This year I submitted my song "Dandelion Seeds" to compete in the contest, which is being judged by several radio DJ's as well as musicians. This year they have Bobby Boilen, Bobby Carter, Raina Douris, Tarik Moody, Quinn Christopherson, Brittany Howard, and Gina Chavez.

They just approved the song today and posted it to the NPR website, which has been great, because it’s been picking up some new plays and I’ve received a few new subscribers on Youtube:
