The State of Professional Music Creators in 2025

I woke up in tears this morning.

I am mentally, physically, and emotionally exhausted. I try my very best to remain balanced, working as a musician. However, when I say I get up at 4:30AM to work, I really do.

It shouldn’t have to be this way. I also realize that I am a very driven person with purpose and meaning.

As mentioned previously, I do the job of many entities in pursuit of playing my original music. No one else works this hard for me, so I do.

In my humble opinion, these tech companies and social media companies, abuse us artists. They abuse us people, as well as our mental health.

They treat musicians and artists as beasts of burden, walking in circles on an imaginary grain mill.

Streaming services steal nearly all profits from musicians, and tech companies make it next to impossible for folks I have spent 15 years connecting with, to even see my posts.

I know that I need a break from posting on social media everyday, not just in this feed, but in all the Facebook and Reddit groups that I post to, that you have no idea that I post into, because people do not see my posts on Facebook Like Page or my Facebook Digital Creator account that I write you from, so I am forced to spend even more time on here trying to connect with people in private groups. I do what I must to find an audience of likeminded folks. I think that this is calculated on part of social media entities.

Admittedly, in the eyes of so many, I am a nobody musician.

I don’t think that.

I think I am very talented, because I have worked for that, for 46 years. I am a damn good songwriter and lyricist.

I am being treated as a tangible object with no feelings by big tech, when in fact, I am extremely sensitive and empathetic and capable of helping so many people with the music I make.

This is my path in life: being an artist. I have known this for a long time. It is no one else’s place to tell me otherwise. It would be from ignorance if you did.

I assure you, these tech companies and social media conglomerates, are not doing anyone a great service. They divide people by spreading divisive topics of conversation, such as politics, for example. While it is a person’s prerogative to share ideas on Facebook, it rarely changes a person’s mind in my humble approximation, so efforts to do such could very well be fruitless.

Sharing ideas on social media with one another is great! I like that. All I am getting at, is that the Facebook algorithm being used, are based on human behavior and propogate according to human short comings and extreme virtues, such as the propensity of argument or the act of caring and empathy.

Other topics do make it through, but normally because of the abundance of connection the individual has achieved through time spent on this platform consistently or the nototiety the individual has amased from being really good at something in the outside world. Kudos to both, deeply and truly. It is time spent either way, and our choice to pursue that which makes us happy is good at its core.

I digress though. I woke up in tears this morning because I am defeated.

I am making really good art, and releasing it every week, and it isn’t reaching its audience.

I ask for help to stay a float, and it’s met with scrutiny by some, and open arms by others. People have absolutely the wrong idea about artists. We work harder than most people on this planet.

If you don’t believe that, try doing it yourself and see how far you get. I have been at this for a long time, so I know from experience.

As a songwriter, I am an observationalist (and a really good one at that).

Legacy musicians: help out your brothers and sisters right now, because we need help. Things aren’t the same as they were when you were coming up. I assure you of that.

Yes, I am trying to do something about it. I was on the phone with a Musician’s Union for two hours yesterday, I have Zoom meetings lined up next week. I am a nobody trying to fix the fucking problem in the real world.

There is a bill going before Congress this year that would force streaming services to pay out half of the monthly fee you give Spotify or Apple Music or so forth, to the musicians. There is zero regulation on these companies in that regard, and they really do steal all of the money from musicians and build oppulent headquarters for themselves with those profits. If you don’t believe me, check out the Spotify headquarters in New York. If you to try to protest outside of their building, you will be removed by the port authority, in no time short.

I have musician friends who have visited the headquarters of one such major streaming platform there and openly said to the tour guide, “oh, so this is where all my money is being spent.”

You can help too if you would like, but first, you need to see the problem. I sure as hell do.

Share this blog maybe. Or don’t. I will do what I can on my end as a “nobody musician.”

New GoFundMe Campaign Launched

I am working on raising money for a few efforts, most notably getting to the Kerrville Folk Festival in May. My car needs quite a bit of maintenance revolving around a timing belt, a tensioner, idler pulleys, water pump, serpentine belt, a set of brake pads, and a few other bells and whistles. The cost of parts has gone up on these things as well as the cost of labor. If you feel up to helping out a bit, I would be so honored. I’m also trying to refresh my merchandise as I have sold out of most everything I have, and get caught up on a power bill that is pretty out of control:

My Friend Mar and I

Mar and I

This is my friend Mar. I haven’t been able to visit him for almost a month because I caught the Bird Flu and wanted to be on the safe side, and not risk him getting ill from me.

Mar and I met from a Synchronistic event. I couldn’t care less if you believe in such things. They sound incredible and maybe even silly, unless you have experienced one yourself. They make you a believer, I assure you. It’s as if something larger than yourself winks and nudges, and lets you know it’s out there.

Mar feels the same way.

Today we talked about his experiences in the Vietnam war. He was born in the Philippines, but fought as an American soldier, because he is American.

He is 78 years old, and still kicking ass. Thank you for being my friend.

Kerrville Folk Festival | Kerrville New Folk Song Competition

You could probably blind fold me with dental floss in this picture, however, the smile is very much me as well.

I’m thrilled to be heading back out to Kerrville, Texas to play the Kerrville Folk Festival, New Folk Competition and more importantly, to re-connect with friends I made last year, and to hopefully make some new friends this year. To me, that’s what life is all about: making friends, authenticity, and to be fearless.

Let’s face it: I’m lousy at competing, especially when it comes to music.

Thank you for letting me tell a few stories again. It’s all I want with my life: to tell stories, and to listen to them from others, and to have the words “welcome home” said to me, again and again.

Home isn’t a place: it’s people. My two cents.

So Beautiful, or So What

I’ve had several songs bouncing around in my head like a 1980’s pinball machine: long hair and leather jacket, 4:20 on the clock. Ping ping. Ping ping.

The clickers and clickety-clack of flippers, knocking that shiny reflective orb into the playfield.

Playing.

We all need a lot more playing. Taoists call it Wu Wei. It has a lot of different names. It could just be takin’ it easy. Easy riding. Chillax. Effortless living. The Way.

The Dude.

I was tasked today with having fun. Just doing whatever the fuck I wanted to that makes me happy, in the moment, so I did that. It has been a beautiful day. I choose to feel happy. I could have woke up miserable too, and I did cry—but I then said, no, today will be a good day. I choose happiness.

Speaking of dudes. I visited my dad yesterday. I’m getting over that Bird Flu (not sure yet but it hasn’t been a normal cold or flu or what have you; it’s been 10 days).. Novel viruses. Coughing up the stuff in my body that no longer serves me. I didn’t want to get him sick, so I waited to see him.

He’s supine in a bed, and he suffers being where he is at. He just wants to go home. I totally get it. We all just want to go home. Like Odysseus in The Odyssey. Back to Ithaca. The war’s over; I just wanna go home.

He’s had multiple strokes over the past several years and he also does everything in his power to hide this notion amongst other things, while also not doing the best job of that either. That’s okay by me.

I’m happy we got to the bottom of things yesterday. It was Scooby-Doo and the Gang, all piling into the Mystery Machine, to solve the case of why my Dad is the way he is.

What I really want, is to grow old with my Dad and for him to fight for his life. It’s a gift for all of us, especially—especially when we treat it that way, for what LIFE really is: sacred.

Sacred as the human breath. Voluntary and involuntary. The perfect way to calm down: controlled breath and meditation.

It’s the simplest forms of what all of us have, that will make this world a better place.

Say, (CBT) Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as a friend of mine, put it to me, over the phone. I mean, just talking in plain English to each other and being as honest as possible,

Breathing. That’s simple too.

There are all these simple answers to problems, right under our noses: our mouths.

Every action, was first a thought, before it is acted out.

Think about it.

Life is what we make of it; so beautiful, or so what (that was one of many songs pinging around this playfield of mine/mind).

My Dad (Part 2)

No person can be defined by a singular or even several sets of occurrences, especially mistakes, within his/her/their life. I am of the opinion and mind that we are far too complicated to merely say: this person is evil or they are a waste of flesh and bone and blood.

It does humanity a huge disservice to think in such shallow water. We, in fact, are quite deep.

When the water is still, we see our own reflection, as a mirror. But, when the water is agitated: we do not.

My father can be a good man.

One day, he paid attention to me. When I was around 19 or 20 years old, he asked me if I wanted guitar lessons!

Hallelujah!

My heart sang for the first time in ages, having him ask me such beautiful words. He saw me! That is what gifts can be: an expression of seeing another person. Truly seeing who they are, and then gifting that individual something which furthers his/her/their pursuits in life.

I took guitar lessons from a man named Joe Dykes. He was a Berklee School of Music Graduate, and a brilliant guitar player.

I asked Joe to teach me how to read music, and he did. Aw, what a gift!

Dad, you are incredible. There are times you are like Babe Ruth: knocking it out of the park!

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

New Music Being Released Every Week

Hey! I just wanted to drop everyone a quick set of thoughts in regards to my plans for 2025. I have been attempting to release a new song to streaming services every week; this endeavor of mine began in February of this year. I don’t exactly know how long this will last. What I can say is that I adore creating music.

I would write out all of the songs that I will be releasing, but since there are so many, I would just be stoked if you pulled open your preferred streaming app from time to time and found something you like.

May this find you all in high spirits. Many blessings and positive vibes to you all!
